The purpose of this Study Guide is to enable the student to better understand the information the authors of the book, Alcoholics Anonymous, intended to impart to each of us based on their experience and knowledge of alcoholism and their Program of Recovery. It can be used by an individual or by a group. This Guide is intended to examine the content of virtually every sentence in the basic text of the Big Book.

*We close our meetings with the Lord’s Prayer because it is a tradition passed down from AA's co-founders, Bill W and Dr. Bob. They chose it not to endorse any specific religion, but because it reflects universal spiritual principles common to all faiths.  In Bill's own writings, he explains that it's use was to foster unity, not to promote Christianity.  While AA has Christian historical roots, the intent has always been inclusion, not exclusion. We continue this practice simply because of those who carried the message to us.
